You must have come across the word LGBTQI+ on the internet , or maybe a newspaper article but still haven’t made sense of it yet.Clear your trepidation and join me explore the sense of this new trendy community of the ‘inverted’.
LGBTQI plus is an acronym used to describe Lesbian ,Gay ,Bisexual ,Transgender ,Queer or questioning persons or the community.
LESBIAN: a lesbian is a woman who is sexually attracted to another woman.
GAY: a man who is attracted to another man sexually.
BISEXUAL: a person who is attracted to both men and women.
TRANSGENDER: a person whose identity is typically not associated by the gender identity they were given at birth.
QUEER: a word that describes people who are other than straight or cisgender.
INTERSEX: A word that describes people have features of both male and female
BRIEF HISTORY
Through research it is said that homosexuality existed in ancient Israel simply because it is prohibited in the Bible, where as it flourished between men and women in ancient Greece.
Substantial evidence also exists for individuals who live at least part of their lives a different gender than assigned to at birth. In addition to this, in the 18th and 19th century the growth of media and human rights drew together activists from all walks of life thus encouraging same sex activism.
In the 20th century a movement in recognition of gays and lesbians was underway ,abbeted by social climate of feminism andf new anthropologies of difference.
The WWII also contributed to the growth of the LGBTQI+ community as men left their homes to go to war and women remained home and kept each other company bringing about lesbianism.
The people of LGBTQ+ Community at that time were sacked from their jobs and killed through hanging under the law of sodomy for Gays and Lewd behavior for Lesbians.
In modern times , Henry Geber founded the society for Human Rights in Chicago, the first documented gay rights organization in the USA in 1924. In the same year, the observance of LGBTQI History month began in USA. A celebrated achievement in LGBTQI History occurred when Queen Beatrix signed a law making Netherlands the first country to legalize same sex marriage.
EMERGING ISSUES WORLDWIDE.
1. Progress: The global campaign to secure protection for LGBTQ+ people has made significant progress in recent days especially in the realm of marriage equality. However, in many countries the LGBTQ+ individuals are still repressed and imprisoned.
2. USA: US leadership has been prominent in supporting the LGBTQ+ Community rights worldwide. President Joe Biden is expected to pursue robust LGBTQ+Right advocacy.
3. Global Right: The UN has been criticized by civil society organisations for recognition of human rights on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity since its establishment in 1945. Their efforts produced the Yogyakarta Principles, which have served as a touchstone for LGBTQI+ Rights ever since.
4. Worldwide: There are 73 countries where homosexuality is illegal and only 5 countries in the world ; Bolivia, Ecuador, Fiji, Malta and the UK have constitutions that explicitly guarantee equality for citizens on the basis of sexual orientation as well as gender identity.
5. Entertainment industry: There are numerous movies and series that feature LGBTQI+ characters and storylines. Gay movies and series are BL(Boys love) which are most popular and ironically, statistics show that the female gender are the highest consumers of such content. Lesbians movies and series are refered to as GL(Girls Love). These sream on various movie streaming plattforms such as Hulu, Netflix , Paramount plus.
SITUATION IN AFRICA
1. General situation: Many countries in Africa have poor reputations in terms of LGBTQI+ right. Out of the 69countries 33 criminalize same-sex relations in most cases these laws are remnants of colonial rule.
2. Violence and Discrimination: Instances of violence against LGBTQI people have been reported in countries like Senegal and Kenya. South Africa despite having strong legal protections continues to battle violence directed against LGBTQI people.
3. Progress: There has been some progress over the last year on the protection of LGBT rights in Africa e.g in Botswana and Angola.

ReplyDeleteThe issue on LGBTQI+ Community, to me is all about culture. The western Culture for example, is accepting on this meanwhile in the African culture we are bound by ancestral norms and customs which are against such a community. The ignorance towards this subject is also a problem, because sooner or later we will have to face the music of our negligence. Lets address this issue As Soon As Possible.
